This surgery is used to treat glaucoma of various types, including congenital glaucoma, neovascular glaucoma, and glaucoma caused by an injury. It is performed in a hospital and typically takes 1 to 2 hours. During this procedure, the surgeon inserts a tiny tube, known as a shunt, into the white part of your eye. The tube allows excess fluid to drain from your eye, lowering your intraocular pressure. You will usually be awake during this surgery, but you will be given numbing medication as well as medication to help you relax. You can usually return home the same day, but you will need to be driven there. To help prevent swelling and infections, your doctor will prescribe eye drops that you must use for several weeks. These eye drops are not the same as other glaucoma eye drops you may be using. While you recover, you may need to avoid certain activities, such as heavy lifting, for 2 to 4 weeks. You'll also need to see your doctor ensure that your eye is healing properly.
